Course Description

This class and blog are an introduction to typographic history, the study of letterforms, type terminology, type classifications, and typeface selection. The class is an exploration of type mechanics and aesthetics; while using type in a variety of design applications and projects. We examine structure, layout, typographic hierarchy, as well as the relationship of type to image and cultural context.

Objectives

- Know the historical development of type
- Classify categories and know how to choose the right typeface
- Use proper type terminology
- Classify and understand anatomy of type
- Recognize the aesthetic value of type
- Interpret psychological, emotional,
and cultural aspects of typography
- Create and edit content for design projects
- Develop designs using design software
- Define and use of hierarchy in type design
- Design and implement layout grids
- Create and construct finished work
- Review and analyze finished designs
